Also, research can play a pivotal role in becoming a better advocate for our patients. According to Bernhofer (2011), the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmal eficence, and justice should guide all health professionals when they make assessment and treatment decisions. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with many physicians taking advantage of the patient's lack of knowledge in the medical field. Therefore, it is our responsibility as nurses, to gain knowledge from research to determine if the physician is doing what is best for the patient. If the physician is providing quality care, then I can educate the patient on the treatment based on the evidence that I obtained from the study.
